Hambleton was considered one of the three brightest stars to emerge from the 1980s NYC art scene (along with Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring).

After multiple FALSE out Solo exhibitions which brought the young artist widespread acclaim, plagued by drug and personal issues he disappeared into the NYC underbelly for decades, only to emerge years later at NYC Fashion week, his show, sponsored by Ralph Lauren, was an immediate success, with originals selling for upwards of seven figures.

Hambleton’s life was documented in “Shadowman” (Netflix), which was released shortly before his death in 2017.

This Shadow Head Painting is a classic example of Hambleton’s work, executed in the late 90s, Hambleton’s trademark “Shadowhead” is painted in bright silver acrylics against a backdrop of matte black paint.

The painting has a border of artists tape around it. With some various other colors of paint (most notably red paint).

The piece elicits strong feelings of loneliness, chaos, despair and hopelessness; emotions and feelings one can only assume the brilliant yet tortured artist experienced during his tenure in NYC (oftentimes experiencing homeless). These are reoccurring themes in all of Hambleton’s works.

This piece came to the current owner directly from the collection of Robert Murphy, who was Hambleton’s benefactor for many years; pulling him out of destitute homelessness, supplying him with the funds and studio space needed to execute what turned out to be some of Richard’s most prolific and iconic works.
