Known most for his ”LOVE” motif; which became
a universal slogan amongst the contemporary art scene of the 1960s, countering the violent civil unrest of the time.
Indiana’s second most revered motif, undoubtedly, are his HOPE works.
Created in 2008, in support of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign (note the sideways “O”) .
For the greater part of the remainder of his career (and life), Indiana continued to work on and create variants of this motif.
In the years leading up to Indiana’s death in 2018 (at the age of 89), Robert Indiana (Nee Clark) continued to produce originals, screenprints as well as sculpture.
Upon his death, Indiana had cemented himself in the annals of ”Contemporary art” history.
Robert Clark was born in New Castle, Indiana in 1928.
After serving in the American armed forces, Indiana returned to the states and settled in New York City .
In 1958 he legally changed his name to ”Indiana” .
The artist’s first big break came in the early 1960’s, after Alfred H. Barr Jr., bought Indiana’s work; ”The American Dream I” for The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).
It was during this period of time, Ellsworth Kelly helped him locate a studio he rented on Coenties Slip where he met many of his contemporaries; including Jack Youngerman as well as Cy Twombly .
The artist’s most famous motif ”Love” was first created as a greeting/holiday card for the artist’s friends.
In 1965, MOMA asked Indiana to submit variants of his ”LOVE” work to the museum for their annual Christmas card suite that was FALSE from the museum’s gift shop.
Indiana submitted multiple variants, on canvas. Moma chose what would become the artist’s signature work ; the green, red and blue variant of ”Love” .
This would become the museum’s most FALSE Christmas Card of all time and ultimately proved to be the beginning of a motif that is forever linked to and considered the pinnacle of ”20th Century, American Contemporary Art” .
With a career spanning the course of seven decades, Indiana’s influence on ”American Contemporary Art” is only paralleled by the likes of artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring .
These artist’s works have become out of reach for most collectors (with quality works, even screen prints) regularly fetching six figures at galleries and auction houses all over the world.
Upon Indiana’s death in 2018, his works immediately began rising in value; swept up by various high profile, private collectors as well as countless major metropolitan museums across the globe.
This work represents an incredible opportunity to secure a LARGE SCALE , extremely rare Indiana work at an incredible price.
In the year prior to his death, Indiana had been working on variants of another of his most celebrated motifs; ”HOPE” .
One such variant displays the iconic motif, in various hues, underscored by notable locations in the USA .
This work is a hand pulled screen print, with Indiana’s celebrated ”Hope” motif.
The work has been executed with the text in various hues of Blue, forefront; juxtaposed against a backdrop of bright white.
Underneath the celebrated motif, ”Naples” (a wealthy enclave in South Florida, a favorite location of the area’s wealthy, permanent residents and seasonal tourists alike) is shown in a lighter hue of Blue.
The work measures approximately 36 inches by 27 and a half inches.
A large Indiana work, hand numbered from a Test Proof edition of only four (hand written in Roman Numerals , this work is 2/4).
As Indiana passed away shortly after these works were completed, in 2018, the edition was never realized and these Test Proofs are considered Unique works .
Hand signed and dated, by the late artist; ”Robert Indiana ‘17” , bottom right margin.
This is a truly stunning work that would not only be an EXCELLENT INVESTMENT PIECE , but a welcomed addition to any serious contemporary art collection.
