This Black variant (the only hand signed variant), is in truly exceptional condition, having only been displayed briefly through the years.

Executed in 2002, this work is part of the seminal “Chum” series, which directly references the Michelin Man figure while reinterpreting it through KAWS’s unmistakable pop and graffiti-infused visual language. With its inflated, bulbous form and the artist’s signature crossed-out eyes, the “Chum” marked one of the earliest examples of KAWS bridging street culture with collectible design and fine art, laying the foundation for his now global blue-chip status.
The present example is hand-signed and dated by KAWS on the underside of the foot in silver marker, reading “KAWS ’03,” and also bears the molded stamp “© KAWS ’02, CHUM!!” This unique hand-signed detail makes the work significantly more desirable, as most Chum figures were unsigned.
Standing as a three-dimensional embodiment of KAWS’ ability to merge humor, nostalgia, and critique of consumer culture, the Chum remains one of his most celebrated early forms. Sculptural works from this period are increasingly scarce on the secondary market, especially in such pristine condition, making this an extraordinary acquisition for any serious collector.
