APC ART is pleased to present our global collector base with this exceptional set of works — a complete triptych by Roy Lichtenstein titled “As I Opened Fire.”
This set comprises three matching prints, each panel measuring approximately 63 cm × 52.5 cm (25″ × 20.7″), executed as color lithographs on thick wove paper. The triptych was published by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1966 following the museum’s acquisition of the original painting in 1964.
Roy Lichtenstein remains one of the most influential figures of the Pop Art movement. His work forever changed the conversation around “high” and “low” art by transforming imagery from comic books, advertising, and mass media into icons of fine art. As I Opened Fire reimagines a 1962 comic book panel from All American Men of War — turning pulp imagery into a striking visual meditation on power, perception, and the language of modern warfare.
Visually, the triptych is bold and electrifying. The sequential imagery captures the rapid burst of aerial gunfire mid-combat — flames, smoke, and sound effects rendered in Lichtenstein’s signature Ben-Day dots, crisp outlines, and primary colors. The onomatopoeic bursts (“BRAT!”, “BRATATATA!”) give the prints a sense of rhythm and cinematic intensity, while the fragmented text across the panels transforms mechanical violence into a commentary on repetition and desensitization in mass culture.
From an investment standpoint, this triptych represents an extraordinary opportunity. Although originally published in an edition of 3,140 by the Stedelijk Museum, first-edition sets in excellent, untrimmed condition are now exceedingly scarce. The condition of this example is truly remarkable: colors remain vibrant, lines crisp, and paper integrity outstanding. Minor softening to corners consistent with age is the only evidence of its 58-year history.
These prints are unframed and have been preserved flat, never mounted. Each sheet bears the original Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam stamp en verso, verifying its authenticity and provenance.
Few works so succinctly capture Lichtenstein’s power to elevate comic art to cultural critique. His influence can be seen across generations of artists, from Warhol to Hirst and beyond — his style emblematic of postwar American optimism and critique in equal measure.
The works are in hand and will ship immediately with a Certificate of Authenticity from APC ART (bearing the gallery’s blind stamp), guaranteeing authenticity and provenance in perpetuity.
APC ART is pleased to offer archival framing options upon request, utilizing museum-grade materials and preservation standards.
