jersey-city-apartment
Jersey City Apartment

*APC ART is proud to present “Jersey City Apartment,” a rare hand-signed 2019 work by Jonas Wood, one of the most important and immediately recognizable American painters of his generation.*

*Wood has developed a visual language that exists somewhere between portraiture, landscape, still life and domestic observation. His interiors are among the most celebrated images within his practice, transforming seemingly ordinary rooms into complex arrangements of architecture, furniture, plants, artwork, pattern and color. Perspective is deliberately flattened and reorganized, giving his compositions the feeling of both a lived environment and an intricately constructed collage.*

*“Jersey City Apartment” is an especially compelling example of this approach. The work depicts a sophisticated residential interior in Jersey City, with the Manhattan skyline visible beyond an enormous bank of windows across the Hudson River. Wood turns the apartment into an almost theatrical arrangement of geometric forms: black furniture is punctuated by electric yellows, blues and purples, while plants, artwork and decorative objects provide moments of organic interruption throughout the composition.*

*There is an interesting tension between intimacy and scale. We are standing inside someone's home, surrounded by personal possessions, yet beyond the glass lies one of the most recognizable urban environments in the world. Wood treats both with essentially the same visual vocabulary. Manhattan, furniture, houseplants and paintings are flattened into interconnected planes of color and shape, allowing an ordinary domestic scene to become something considerably more psychologically and visually complex.*

*Executed as an **offset lithograph in colors on wove paper**, the work measures an impressive **24 × 32¾ inches (approximately 61 × 83.2 cm)** and was **published by Gagosian, New York in 2019**.*

*Importantly, this is not simply the unsigned exhibition poster more commonly encountered on the secondary market. This example has been **personally hand signed and dated “2019” by Jonas Wood in black marker at the lower right, accompanied by the artist's distinctive flourish, and additionally hand signed with the artist's initials**. That distinction is particularly significant because relatively few examples of the publication were released publicly and substantially fewer were personally signed by Wood.*

*The work was created on the occasion of Jonas Wood's major exhibition at **Gagosian, New York, held April 24 through July 19, 2019**, and reproduces one of the paintings included in that exhibition, “Jersey City Apartment.” As such, the publication is directly connected to an important moment in Wood's exhibition history rather than functioning simply as a later reproduction of an existing image.*

*The composition also provides an unusually personal window into the world Wood depicts. Rather than presenting Manhattan from within Manhattan itself, the skyline is experienced from across the Hudson River. The city becomes part of the apartment's visual architecture—another image framed by the enormous windows and incorporated into the carefully constructed interior.*

*Wood's ability to elevate environments such as this has played an important role in his extraordinary rise within contemporary art. His paintings combine influences ranging from modernist abstraction and Pop Art to domestic photography and traditional still-life painting, yet the resulting images remain unmistakably his own. Flattened perspective, saturated color and the deliberate collision of patterns give his works an immediacy that translates remarkably well between painting and printmaking.*

*There is also a wonderful self-referential quality to “Jersey City Apartment.” Art exists within the artwork itself. Paintings hang throughout the room, becoming part of Wood's larger composition and reinforcing one of the recurring themes within his practice: the spaces we inhabit are partially defined by the objects and images with which we choose to surround ourselves.*

*For collectors, the significance of this particular example lies in the combination of image, provenance and signature. Exhibition publications can provide an accessible connection to an artist's institutional and gallery history, but personally signed examples occupy a considerably different position. Here, the direct association with Wood's 2019 Gagosian exhibition, the scarcity of hand-signed examples and the presence of both his full signature treatment and initials make this a particularly desirable example.*

*At APC ART, we are especially drawn to works that encapsulate an artist's practice within a single image. “Jersey City Apartment” does precisely that. Architecture, landscape, interiors, plants, collected artwork, flattened perspective and Wood's extraordinary sense of color all converge within one composition. It is immediately identifiable as Jonas Wood before the viewer ever reaches the signature.*

*The work is offered **unframed**, allowing its next collector to select a presentation appropriate for their individual environment. APC ART can also arrange bespoke, museum-quality framing upon request.*

*As with all works offered by APC ART, “Jersey City Apartment” will be accompanied by an APC ART Certificate of Authenticity featuring our embossed blind stamp and complete cataloguing information.*

*Please feel free to browse our selection of over 1,100 works from more than 200 of the world's most influential contemporary artists.*

*APC ART offers professional art advisory services backed by decades of experience within the international contemporary art market.
